FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Credit Valley Hospital (CVH) and Trillium Health Centre (Trillium) will teach 54 University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) medical students in each year of the 4-year program for a total of 216 students, as announced last week by the Government of Ontario. The Government’s announcement means the University of Toronto and its partners, including UTM, CVH and Trillium will be able to move forward with the development of a new medical academy, which will officially open at UTM in 2011.
“This is a welcome and long- awaited announcement by our hospitals,” said Janet Davidson, O.C., president and CEO of Trillium Health Centre. “The announcement of these additional positions and capital funding to support the construction of the Academy of Medicine building at UTM is great news for all the partners. We hope to receive news of additional funding for the teaching hospitals so we can develop a comprehensive teaching program for our future doctors. With the Government’s continued support, Trillium and CVH will provide UTM’s medical students with unique learning experiences in primary, secondary, and tertiary level care, which will help build access to physicians in our community.”
Michelle DiEmanuele, president and CEO of The Credit Valley Hospital said, “Community hospitals offer opportunities to witness and diagnose important everyday medical problems that doctors experience in community settings. They will also experience the very real pressures and challenges posed by fast-paced, high traffic, culturally diverse health-care settings. Last week’s announcement has confirmed our hospitals’ commitment to the Academy of Medicine in partnership with the University of Toronto Mississauga.”
Academy Director Dr. Pamela Coates said, “The development of an MD program at the medical expansion campus in Mississauga is a milestone event for our hospitals and our community. Together we will be able to offer the students a rich, diverse, community-based experience to prepare them to be the doctors our community will need in the future.”
