MISSISSAUGA —The Credit Valley Hospital is currently in C. difficile outbreak but in a downward trend with no new cases reported in the last seven days. The C.difficile outbreak was declared on June 28 when there was an increase in hospital-acquired cases from three patients in May to eight patients, at which time public health was immediately notified.
During this time Credit Valley has been holding daily infection control meetings to monitor the situation. As soon as the rise in the number of cases was identified, the hospital implemented enhanced cleaning measures throughout the hospital with a specific focus on units with cases and increased awareness of good hand hygiene practices – the most effective way to prevent the spread of infection.
“We remain deeply committed to patient safety and are monitoring the situation on a daily basis” said Dr. Alicia Sarabia, Medical Microbiologist and Infection Control Officer and Chief of Medicine at The Credit Valley Hospital. “We are doing everything possible to manage this outbreak and are very encouraged by the results of our efforts over the past week as we have had no new cases reported. If this continues, we will be in a position to declare the outbreak over within the next several days.”
Patient care activities and visiting hours will continue as usual at the hospital. Visitors are encouraged to clean their hands regularly and use the hand sanitizing stations located throughout the hospital.
The Credit Valley Hospital has consistently been at or below the average of C. difficile rates reported by hospitals throughout the province.
