Dr. Tara Allen appointed Medical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at The Credit Valley Hospital

May 17, 2011

(MISSISSAUGA) — Dr. Ann Bayliss, Chief of Paediatrics at The Credit Valley Hospital, today announced the appointment of Dr. Tara Allen as Medical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), effective immediately.

Dr. Allen is a neonatologist, having completed her paediatric training at Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario, and a neonatology fellowship at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, London, Ontario. Most recently, she completed a fellowship in paediatric respiratory medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children (Sick Kids) where her research focused on sedation and respiratory drive in infants in neonatal intensive care. Dr. Allen, who joined the hospital’s paediatric department this February, has been the recipient of several teaching awards.

“Dr. Allen is an excellent choice and welcome addition to the paediatric team at Credit Valley,” said Dr. Bayliss. Her appointment coincides with the recent opening of the beautiful new Erin Mills Regional Women’s and Children’s Health Centre at The Credit Valley Hospital. The Centre includes a Regional Advanced Level II NICU – one of only five in the GTA. Over the next three years the NICU will expand from 21 to 37 bassinets. This expansion will mean that babies requiring specialized care may remain in their own community for the majority of their care, rather than being transferred to Toronto or Hamilton. “Dr. Allen has the expertise to lead the expansion of our NICU to provide an advanced level of care to our patients and their families,” added Dr. Bayliss.

In addition to the NICU, the new Erin Mills Regional Women’s and Children’s Health Centre also includes a Mother and Baby Patient Care Unit, a Paediatric Patient Care Unit, Paediatric Oncology and Paediatric Medicine Clinics, and an expanded Birthing Suite.
