Bring your teddy bear for a "check-up"

(MISSISSAUGA, October 28, 2011) – Children and their families are invited to bring their favourite stuffed toy for a check-up at The Credit Valley Hospital’s (CVH) Teddy Bear Clinic. In celebration of the hospital’s 25th anniversary, CVH is hosting a Teddy Bear Clinic and health promotion event for the community at the Erin Mills Town Centre (lower level, centre) on Friday, November 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This year, Credit Valley celebrated 25 years of delivering high quality health care to the residents of Mississauga, as well as the opening of the new A&H Wings at the hospital. To mark these milestones, staff and volunteers from Credit Valley, along with community partners, will be setting up information stations at the Erin Mills Town Centre to highlight the programs and services CVH provides to its patients and their families. At the Teddy Bear Clinic, visitors will be able to listen to Teddy’s heart with a stethoscope, check Teddy’s throat with a tongue depressor, and give him a bandaid for any ‘ouchies’.

The event is intended to help children and their families understand what to expect during a visit to the hospital, increase their comfort level during medical experiences, and inform the community about the programs and services that CVH provides. Other event highlights include: the chance to meet “Bug” – the hospital’s Therapeutic Clown; learn about the importance of health and safety in the hospital from the Infection Protection & Control team; see an incubator used in the hospital’s new Regional Advanced Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; and speak to representatives from the hospital’s Paediatrics, Mother & Baby, and Asthma Therapy Units. Visitors can also meet with members from the Emergency Department, Foundation, and CVH’s community health partner, Peel Public Health.

The hospital’s new A&H Wings, which opened in May 2011, include an expansion of 270,000 square feet, and a renovation of 70,000 square feet. The new wings include the Erin Mills Regional Women’s & Children’s Health Centre. The Centre houses a complete range of programs, including: a Regional Advanced Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a 15-room Birthing Suite, Mother & Baby Patient Care Unit, a Paediatric Patient Care Unit, a Paediatric Medicine Clinic and Paediatric Oncology clinic. Other highlights of the addition include a new high-dose radiation therapy suite and resources for expanded cancer treatments, and an expanded laboratory to provide greater in-house support for diagnostics.

The Credit Valley Hospital provides community-based patient and family-centred care to approximately one million people in Mississauga and the surrounding region. As the regional maternal-child centre, CVH operates an Advanced Level 2 NICU. CVH has a teaching affiliation with The Academy of Medicine at the University of Toronto Mississauga. The Credit Valley Hospital has consistently achieved the highest awards from Accreditation Canada, meeting national safety and patient care standards. CVH Hospital values excellence, leadership, diversity and partnership so that Together We Create Better Health Care.
