The new unit, which underwent $1.3 million in renovations, has been specifically designed for the needs of LTC patients. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is providing operating funds for the unit through an accountability agreement with the Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network (LHIN).

The new beds have been open since January 27 and are managed in cooperation with Extendicare Canada Inc., which also operates the McCall Centre's 120 existing complex continuing care (CCC) beds on behalf of The Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre.

“We are continuing to evolve programs and services to better meet the needs of seniors,” said Michelle DiEmanuele, president and CEO of The Credit Valley Hospital and Trillium Health Centre. “The addition of the new interim LTC beds greatly benefits seniors across the region and assist in providing in the right setting.”

The interim rooms have been authorized by the province for access by eligible patients in the Mississauga Halton LHIN (which includes south Etobicoke) who are currently in acute care awaiting long term placement. The Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) of Mississauga Halton will determine eligibility for admission as it does for all regional LTC beds.

“The 21 new beds, which address an urgent shortage of LTC beds in the community, are the result of partners working together to add more capacity into the system,” said DiEmanuele. “We truly appreciate the role our partners have played in getting these beds open. The LHIN guided us through the approval and funding processes. The CCAC will allocate these beds to patients who are in acute care settings but don’t need to be. This will ensure those patients are cared for in the most appropriate setting, and help improve patient flow through the hospitals and emergency departments.”
